Don't Get Fooled: The Myths of Family Violence
- Battering only affects me. No one else would understand.
- Battering outbursts are only a momentary loss of control.
- Battering won't produce serious injuries. It's just a slight way of discipline.
- Counseling is all that is needed to stop the violence. If he goes to counseling, I will be safe.
- He's going to church now, so he won't batter me anymore.
- Nobody else would ever want me, and if they did, it would just be the same.
- He only hurt me because he was drinking (using drugs, etc.). He'd never act like that if he hadn't been under the influence.
- It was all my fault. If I had not been nagging, running my mouth, late with supper, etc., then he would never have had to hit me.
- I'll never be able to make it on my own, I need him to survive.
