An Overview of Handling ABAWD Cases |
ABAWDs
are E&T mandatory individuals ages 18 through 49 who are not pregnant,
who have no children under 18 in their AU, and are not physically or mentally
unfit for employment. Use
the
following
steps
to handle
an ABAWD case. |
Step 1 |
Identify Able-Bodied
Adults
Without
Dependents |
Step 2 |
Assign an appropriate Period of Eligibility
(POE)
Between one and three months,
depending on:
how many months the ABAWD has already received
without meeting ABAWD work requirements
AND
whether we anticipate s/he will meet
requirements in the future
|
Step 3 |
Determine ABAWD work activity
working an average of 20
hours per week (80 hours averaged monthly)
OR
participating for at least 20 hours per
week in training or education
OR
performing work experience for required
number of hours per month as established by the following formula: FS allotment
divided by minimum wage ($5.15); always drop fractions of an hour.
Example 1: FS allotment = 152 ÷
5.15 = 29.51 = 29 hours/month
Example 2: FS allotment = 500 ÷
5.15 = 97.08 = 97 hours/month
|
Step 4 |
Arrange for ABAWD to participate
in the activity |
Step 5 |
Provide Support Services |
Step 6 |
Monitor participation in the activity
If the ABAWD is working, verify
hours worked every month
If the ABAWD is in an educational activity
or training, verify satisfactory progress and 20 hours per week attendance
every
month
If the ABAWD is in work experience, verify
hours in the work experience activity, satisfactory performance, and no
unexcused absences every month
|
Step 7 |
Take action if the ABAWD fails
to participate
Failure to participate may result
in E&T sanctions
AND
months of ABAWD eligibility exhausted
|
Step 8 |
Report ABAWD participation
(exemptions and sanctions) |
